Song of the Week: September 26, 2006

It’s not the usual time of week, but I feel like you all deserve it for visiting so much! Here’s a new, long-overdue song of the week

I haven’t yet sung the praises of one of my favorite modern bands. If you know me in person, chances are you’ve seen me in my bright green shirt with the band’s name emblazoned on it. Of course I’m talking about The Academy Is…

In case you didn’t already know this, here’s a little history on the band. The Academy Is… used to be called “The Academy,” until they discovered that there were other bands named The Academy. So, they tacked on “Is…” to stand out. And stand out they do: they’re one of the most unique and enjoyable bands today. It’s a shame they haven’t been receiving the attention they deserve. Or is it? Many people can agree that Fall Out Boy was much better before they became an MTV sensation.

Maybe someday the elitist in me will say, “I knew TAI before they became famous.”

But that’s all beside the point. This week’s song comes off of the band’s debut album Almost Here (Fueled By Ramen, 2005). While all of the songs on the album are, for lack of a better word, amazing, this is a great track to get you started on the band.

The opening verse is pretty uncommon if you think about it; but if you really listen, you can tell that the lead singer (William Beckett, who, according to Wikipedia played a vampire in Fall Out Boy’s A Little Less Sixteen Candles, A Little More “Touch Me”) is singing an advertisement to buy his album. Quite hilarious.

From there, the song builds to the chorus, which includes a frantic drumbeat, to the redemption-song-style interlude, to a final chorus. Although the song is over far too quickly, the creative lyrics and addictive melodies will have you craving more of this incredible band.

This week’s Song of the Week is Classifieds.

Classifieds is available on The Academy Is’… 2005 debut album Almost Here, available now on Fueled By Ramen.

I highly recommend you check out both this song and this band. What are you waiting for? Go! Download! Tell your friends!
