Song of the Week: August 11, 2006

This week’s song is a unique choice in that it’s not rock, punk, alternative rock, power pop, or something else with two guitars, a bass, and drums. It’s a little-known selection by my favorite hip hop/R&B artist……John Legend. This song features just Legend’s voice and piano. It starts out expectedly slow, but eventually becomes surprisingly powerful, especially given the lack of drums or other instruments. It tells the story of two ordinary people trying to make a relationship work.I especially like the lyrics of the song: they paint love not as a fairy tale but as something real and familiar. This song is a perfect example of why I like John Legend: he doesn’t use the typical set of hip-hop lyrics, he makes something deep. Not everyone will like his style, but I think everyone should give it a shot.

In case you didn’t catch the song’s title earlier in the article, this week’s song is

Ordinary People

  1. Love is more often than not mundane and pedestrian. Only in our imagination where love takes on mythical proportion. Someone told me its all because of the chemicals in our bloodstream driving us insane.
